The Rise of Red Skull - Card Spoiler?

For reasons unknown, the lovely folks over at Fantasy Flight Games have sent me my own Marvel Champions spoiler card to reveal to the world. Yes, you heard that right, this is a Teenage Student Whinger Wordsmith world exclusive. No other place on the internet has revealed or talked about this card yet. It is safe to say I have finally achieved my potential and joined the board game blogger big leagues. I'll just give my mum a quick phone call and tell her I've made it.

We're roughly a month away from The Rise of Red Skull finally being released to the masses, and I for one can not wait. With five brand new scenarios and two new heroes, complete with their own pre-built decks, it contains an impressive 265 cards, one of which is revealed below:

Jessica Drew's Apartment makes up one of her fifteen hero cards and, if my card game lingo is accurate, is an economy card (please correct me if I am wrong). Immediate similarities can be drawn between this card, Hawkeye's Quiver, and the protection ally Brother Voodoo, with all three searching the top five cards of your deck and adding a maximum of one of them to your hand (technically Hawkeye's Quiver is slightly different but the general effect is similar).

Whilst the fact that to use Jessica Drew's Apartment you must be in alter-ego form is a hindrance, it makes up for this by the fact it will add an extra card to your hand far more consistently than the likes of Brother Voodoo, and will even give you some choice in what card you choose to take. Due to eight of her hero cards also being aspect cards, aspect cards will likely make up roughly three quarters of Spider-Woman's deck.

I attempted to utilise my maths degree to calculate how many aspect cards you would expect in a random draw of five cards, however, that proved far too difficult and gave me a headache so instead I asked my maths friend and he worked out that you would expect 3.59 aspect cards in a random five card draw (presuming you use a 40 card deck with 28 aspect cards). A choice of somewhere between 3 and 4 cards is pretty solid in my opinion, although that does not account for some of the aspect cards being the same, which obviously limits your choices.

This card obviously, and intentionally, synergises with her hero ability, where every aspect card played gives her +1 THW, +1 ATK and +1 DEF until the end of the round. With five cards to choose from, you will sometimes be able to choose an aspect card which does not match one in your hand, not only giving you that card but also the ability to increase her base stats.

The slight disappointment regarding Jessica Drew's Apartment is the fact that after searching the top five cards of your deck, you have to shuffle. Initially I thought this card used the new mechanic from Hawkeye's quiver, meaning not only do you get to add a card to your hand but you also get to scry the top of your deck and therefore will know what your next few cards are - ideal for playing the Hulk ally. Unfortunately, this is not the case.

What this card does indicate, however, is that Spider-Woman is far less reluctant to flip to alter-ego than Hawkeye. From what I can tell, Hawkeye has no cards with alter-ego actions and even his alter-ego ability is only really going to be used at the start of the game. With her apartment in play, Jessica Drew is looking at a hand size of 7, as well as the ability to look at the top card of any deck, whenever she is in alter-ego form.

All in all a solid, fairly costed economy card that ties nicely into her abilities. One flip to alter-ego will give you the ability to use this card twice, meaning it will have already recouped its cost. Massive thank you to Fantasy Flight Games for sharing this card with me.
